Why sewage is different
Sewage is Category 3 water carrying bacteria, viruses and parasites. Porous materials it touches โ carpet, pad, drywall, insulation โ generally must be removed and discarded, not just dried. Crews wear protective equipment and disinfect all remaining surfaces.
Common causes
- Main line clogs from grease, wipes or roots
- Municipal line backups during heavy rain
- Septic system failure (common in rural parts of the county)
- Toilet overflows from a blocked drain
What to do right now
- Keep children and pets out of the area.
- Stop using water โ every flush or drain adds to the backup.
- Turn off HVAC if it might spread odors or contaminants.
- Don't try to clean it with household mops and towels.
- Call a plumber for the blockage and a restoration provider for cleanup.
Insurance tip
Many homeowner policies exclude sewer backup unless you've added a 'water backup' endorsement. Check your policy, and document the damage either way.
